Vuichard Michel SA has 43 years’ experience in electrical discharge machining. For its micro-machining subcontracting work, it has a Matsuura centre with a ground bed, a 60,000 rpm spindle and 0.1μ travel for 5-axis micro-milling with cutters larger than 0.04 mm in diameter, six wire EDM machines for wire diameters greater than 0.03 mm, two Sarix machines for micro-drilling holes with a diameter of more than 0.025 mm, and finally ten die-sinking EDM machines for shapes larger than 0.02 mm.

Founded by Michel, the Vuichard company specialises in high-precision electrical discharge machining of very small components. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) has found its way into the world of machining via the toolmakers and mouldmakers. However, this technique offers further potential, particularly in batch production. A subcontractor in the Haute-Savoie region has understood this for a very long time.

Electro-erosion technology is facing a growth crisis, on top of the economic one. With a large installed base of machinery, machines that show little wear and tear, and a mould-making sector in difficulty, the challenge today is to broaden a horizon that is somewhat limited. One subcontractor has clearly recognised this, steering its business and investment towards EDM production for all sectors of industrial engineering.

Readers of Mach’Pro are already familiar with the Savoy-based company Michel Vuichard. Michel Vuichard, the founder, describes it as a generalist EDM subcontractor serving all sectors. And it is true that the company produces parts for the automotive, energy and household appliance sectors, as well as for the luxury goods sector. Better still, small, medium and large production runs (over 10,000) far exceed the single-unit production typically associated with this technology. The common thread running through these parts is the difficulty involved in their manufacture.
